There are many things to think about when choosing a photographer for your portraits. What kind of images you want? What setting is best for your family? Does the photographer's vision match ours? I hope that by reading this and looking at my sample images you will get an idea of what kind of photographer I am and also some ideas of what you want for your portraits.
The most important thing to me is that the photograph reflect the people in it. I want to catch a piece of their personality. If the photograph is of a family, I want to capture some of the relationship between the family members. From me you will not get formality. I hate posing and will do everything in my power to keep you from trying too hard to look good. Only through making you comfortable and helping you forget about the camera can I get past the artifice and hope to show something real.
I love to take portraits at your home or other special place. I think that having the backgroud of your home in the image helps to create an intimacy that is harder to replicate in a studio setting. I am also able to work in a studio, if that is the type of image you are most interested in.
I do most of my work in black and white but I also am happy to do color. If you prefer color, I suggest you try a roll or two of black and white as well. There is a classic and timeless look to black and white that is totally different than what you get from color images.
I do all of my photography with film. I think that digital cameras are fine and have their place, but I prefer to take the additional time and effort to get the look that I can only get from film. To that end, I also do all of my own printing on the best papers available. With that combination, you will get images that will last a lifetime and have a look of timelessness that you can't get any other way.
